Mining Translation Case Studies for Ecuador

Challenge: The company needed an English EIAS package for an international lender's social and environmental due diligence. The package combined a feasibility study, an updated environmental management plan, a community consultation summary, and a concession status review. Project names, concession codes, defined acronyms, and water-monitoring terminology had to remain consistent across files, and several annexes were scan-heavy PDFs.

Approach: Source review identified the file structure, glossary requirements, and the priority chapters for the lender. A project-specific glossary was built from the prior Spanish EIA and checked against the company's preferred English terminology. One mining-specialist translator handled the technical chapters, a second handled the community and social sections, and a third reviewer checked the full package for consistency. A glossary cross-check was run on the final English version against the Spanish source.

Outcome: The full package was delivered electronically in 22 business days, six days inside the lender deadline. The lender's social and environmental advisor accepted the translation on the first review with no clarification requests on terminology, and the company has continued to use the same glossary for subsequent quarterly reports.

Challenge: The client needed a Spanish translation of the feasibility study for an Ecuadorian bank syndicate reviewing a project finance facility. The translation had to match the company's prior English disclosures so that any figure, table, and footnote in the Spanish version could be traced back to the source without reinterpretation. Engineering units, reserve classifications, and cost-schedule figures were particularly sensitive.

Approach: The source file was reviewed before quoting to confirm editable tables, figure counts, and the appendix structure. A feasibility-specific translator handled the geology, mining, and processing sections; a second translator handled the financial and cost sections; a third reviewer cross-checked all numbers and units against the source. Edits to Spanish text were delivered in tracked changes so the client's Quito-based counsel could review before finalization.

Outcome: The Spanish feasibility was delivered in 18 business days, well inside the investor committee deadline. The bank syndicate accepted the document without modification requests, and the client's counsel used the same translation as the basis for a follow-on submission to the Ecuadorian securities regulator.

Challenge: The operator needed an English version of its annual environmental compliance audit for its international board, and a Spanish version of the corrective action plan for submission to the regulator. The audit combined monitoring tables, photographs, regulatory references, and corrective action commitments. Several tables had been redacted from the source by the previous consultant and had to be re-typed from raw monitoring data.

Approach: We split the project into two parallel tracks: the audit translation for the board, and the corrective action plan for the regulator. The audit translation focused on consistent terminology for monitoring parameters and regulatory references. The corrective action plan was reviewed with the operator's Quito-based environmental manager to confirm that commitment language aligned with permit conditions.

Outcome: Both deliverables were ready inside the board review window, and the regulator accepted the corrective action plan without modification. The operator has since standardized its annual audit and corrective action translation process with the same glossary and reviewer assignment.
